Frequently Asked Questions about Polypropylene

Which type of polypropylene is more suitable for producing hot and cold water pipes?

Answer: Random copolymer type is the best option, because it has high thermal stability and pressure resistance.

Is polypropylene safe for food contact?

Answer: Yes, many grades of polypropylene have FDA and EU Food Contact certifications and are suitable for food and pharmaceutical packaging.

What additives can be added to PP?

Answer: Additives such as UV stabilizers, masterbatch colors, fiberglass, talc and antistatic agents are used to improve performance and appearance.

Is polypropylene resistant to sunlight?

Answer: No, in its raw form, but with the addition of UV-resistant additives or by selecting a light-resistant grade, its stability can be significantly increased.

What are the storage conditions for polypropylene?

Answer: Store in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. Contact with moisture or intense light may change its properties.

Is polypropylene recyclable?

Answer: Yes, polypropylene has recycling code number 5 and its recycled grade is used in the production of industrial parts, trash cans, boxes and household appliances.

Polypropylene: Comprehensive Buying Guide and Technical Specifications

Polypropylene (PP) is a versatile thermoplastic polymer with wide applications in various industries. Due to its high chemical resistance, lightness and affordable price, it is considered one of the most popular plastics in the world.

What is Polypropylene?

Polypropylene (PP) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer obtained from the polymerization of propylene monomer. This material melts at temperatures around 160 to 170°C and has a low density (0.90 to 0.91 g/cm³). Polypropylene is used in many industries due to its high resistance to fatigue, chemicals and moisture.

Types of Polypropylene

Homopolymer (PP-H)

The hardest and most resistant type of polypropylene used for injection parts, industrial pipes and resistant packaging.

Random Copolymer (PP-R)

Flexible and transparent; suitable for hot and cold water pipes, medical containers and household products.

Block Copolymer (PP-B)

Has high toughness and impact resistance; used in car bumpers, industrial boxes and outdoor parts.

Terpolymer (PP-T)

Soft and processable; suitable for thin plastic sheets, food packaging and flexible industrial applications.

Advantages of Polypropylene

  • Low production cost due to inexpensive propylene monomer
  • Economic final price compared to other polymers
  • Low density and light weight suitable for industrial parts
  • Wide variety of grades with different physical and chemical properties
  • Progress in new grades with better strength and stability
  • Increasing application in medical equipment, especially special grades
  • Ability to combine with other polymers to improve properties
  • Replacement of polymers such as PS and PE in many industries

Disadvantages of Polypropylene

  • Brittleness in cold: At low temperatures, toughness decreases and the material becomes brittle.
  • Sensitivity to UV light: It quickly degrades and changes color when exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Limited colorability: Due to its non-polar surface, dye absorption and printing on it are difficult.
  • High flammability: It burns quickly when in contact with flame and produces noticeable smoke.
